When you are on the 10th floor, you have the POTENTIAL of doing more damage to a car below by dropping something on it than if you did it from the 1st floor. If walk up the stairs from the 1st to the 10th, you did work to get yourself, and whatever you were carrying, up to that higher level. And that work is the source of the energy increase in the potential energy total. Or

Energy always require to do something.
Now if you are climbing the steps. You are doing work against gravitational force.
Now you need more amount of energy compare to gravitational force.
Potential energy is energy require to do certain work.
Hence as you go up that much amount of energy is spent and its stored as potential energy(your ability to go up). Potential energy is a measure of work done overcoming the force of gravity, so the higher you go the more energy you need.

>Potential energy is “energy stored” which may later be used or converted to some other form of energy. With each unit increase in height, work is done against force of gravity and equal amount of energy is stored which we call as Potential energy.
