Cell is the basic structural and functional unit of any living organism. No organism can exist without cells. Cells join with each other to form higher levels of organisation like tissues, organs and systems. An organism may consist of a single cell (unicellular organism) or may contain many cells (multicellular organism). All activities carried out by an organism are basically done by different cells in a coordinated manner.
