Respiration occurs all the time in living organisms including plants.

When photosynthesis occurs during daytime, the oxygen released during this process is used by plants for respiration. But at night, in the absence of sunlight, plants do not carry out photosynthesis and hence have to use atmospheric oxygen for respiration.
