The cone bearing the female gametes is larger.

The male cones are usually small, clustered and more papery. The female cones are larger and tend to be more rigid.

The male cones deteriorate quickly whereas the female cones are long lasting.

The male cones provide pollen whereas the female cones are the receptors of pollen. Female pine cones contain the egg.

The male (staminate) cones fall off after pollen is dispersed, leaving the female (ovate) cones to develop into familiar seed bearing pine cones.

The male cones form on the lower part of the tree whereas the female cones form on the upper part of the tree.
