Natural gas generation is the part of coalification process and thus created & stored in the coal.
Coal originates from the transformation of terrestial plants buried into earth to carbon. As burial increases, the peat is subjected to increasing temperature and pressure. This results into decrease in moisture content and increase in carbon content . so, with chemical reactions , byproducts formed are water, carbon dioxide, methane gas.
And, natural gas is the methane gas so Natural gas is derived from coal.
