how to learn the periodic table block wise?
The block names (s, p, d, f and g) are derived from the quality of the spectroscopic lines of the associated atomic orbitals i.e. Sharp, Principal, Diffuse and Fundamental. Each block is named after its characteristic orbital; thus, the blocks are: s, p, d and f.
The respective highest-energy electrons in each element in a block belong to the same atomic orbital type like for example in case of s-block elements; the outer electrons are filled in s-orbital and since s-orbital can accommodate a maximum of 2 electrons we have only 2 groups in this block . Similarly, in case of p-block elements, the outer electrons are filled in p-orbital and since p orbital can accommodate a maximum of 6 electrons so the total no. of groups in p-block are 6 with the valence electrons varying from p1 to p6. Similarly, for d block we have 10 groups having the outer configuration from d1 to d10.
