How is electric flux a scalar quantity?

Electric flux is a scalar quantity, because it's the dot product of two vector quantities, electric field and the perpendicular differential area. 

This is written in terms of differentials as: 

d?E = E ? dA

where d?E is the differential electric flux, E is the electric field, and dA is the perpendicular differential area. Bolded quantities are vectors.
