explain why covalent compounds have usually low melting and boiling points.

Covalent compounds are formed by the sharing of electrons, hence the bonding is relatively weak. So, the bonds require less enegry (in comparision to ionic compounds) to break the bonds. This is why covalent compounds have low mp or bp.
