Why is the focal length of the objective lens of a compound microscope kept quite small?

As the  magnifying power of compound microscope is inversely proportional to the focal length of the objective lens.
Hence , smaller is the focal length, higher is the magnifying power.
and smaller is the focal length , higher is the resolving power.
