In space there is a relative motion between earth and moon.
Since there is a huge distance between earth and moon as compared to  the distance between earth and an apple.
So when moon falls towards earth the earth is also moving away so it is like moon is chasing around the earth in circular orbit around the sun where it move arounds the earth.
If there would have been sufficient distance between earth and apple it wold have also went into an orbit around earth
