why does hydrogen combine in molecular form with chlorine in molecular form to form hydrogenchloride ?why not an independent atomof hydrogen combine with an independent atom of chlorine to form hydrogen chloride?

Most substances, do not occur in `atomic' form. That is, they do not have the properties which would be associated with atoms behaving as a collection of atoms. Atoms get joined together into MOLECULES. A molecule is the smallest building block for a chemical COMPOUND consisting of more than one element.
