Just to fulfill their outermost atomic orbital and attain a noble gas like configuration, these elements form diatomic molecule.
As each hydrogen atom had to "borrow" one electron to fill its orbital. The resultant molecule is called H2.
Oxygen has six electrons in its outermost orbital. It wants two more to attain a stable configuration. To get them, the oxygen atom will "share" two of its six electrons with another oxygen atom. It will form diatomic oxygen molecule.
