what will happen to the current in a circuit if a voltmeter were inserted into the circuit by mistake?

There will not be not much effect on the current in the circuit if we connect a voltmeter in the circuit as the resistance of the voltmeter is kept ver high and it is connectec in the parallel. So the net resistance of the circuit will not change by much and the current will also not change by much amount.
 
If one connect high resistance in parallel with low resistance , the  resultant  will approximately equal to the low resistance.
