Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell and release energy for various chemical activities needed for life.  Plastids are either chloroplats or leucoplasts. Chloroplasts are important for photosynthesis in plants. Leucoplasts store materials such as starch, oils and protein granules.

Mitochondria and plastids have their own DNA and ribosomes. Hence they are able to make some of their own proteins.
