Cork is the buoyant, light brown substance obtained from the outer bark layer of the cork oak.
It is obtained from the new outer sheath of bark formed by the inner bark after the original rough outer bark is removed. The outer sheath may then be stripped and will form again. The outer bark, or cork, is protective in function.
