The main postulates of this theory are:

(a) All organisms are composed of cells.

(b) The existence of an organism depends on the activities and interactions of its constituent cells.

(c) All cells arise from pre-existing cells.

The cell theory was formally articulated in 1839 by Schleiden & Schwann. The third postulate was added by Virchow.
