what are matrix? what are the difference between matrix and cell?

Matrix is the extracellular substance in which tissue cells (as of connective tissue) are embedded.  
The cells of connective tissue are living, separated from each other and less in number. Homogenous, gel-like, non-living intercellular substance called matrix forms the main bulk of the connective tissue.
