Hollow prisms are used to study, observe or compare the refraction of light in different liquids of different refractive indices.

This is a hollow glass prism with hole to allow fluids to be added. Equilateral. Comes with a stopper.
Passing light through a hollow prism is effectively the same as passing light through two plate glass sheets. On a flat plate, the incoming and outgoing angles are equal and opposite for all wavelengths. Therefore, the dispersion incurred by refraction on the incoming and outgoing surfaces cancels. There is a small residual dispersion because of the spread of wavelengths inside the plate glass.
