Tri iodide ion has trigonal bypyramidal electron geometry but its molecular geometry is linear.Since, each iodine ion has 7 valence electrons. All three iodine atoms arrange to form trigonal bipyramidal geometry with its lone pairs.Hence, creating 5 regions of electron density.
