Find the ratio in which the line segment joining the points P(3,-6) and Q(5,3) is divided by the x-axis.

Let the ratio be k:1.
The coordinates of the point that divides PQ in the ratio k:1 are
(5k+3/ k+1,  3k-6/ k+1)
This point lies on x-axis its ordinate is zero.
Hence,
3k-6/ k+1 = 0
k = 2
Thus, the required ratio is 2:1.
