A galvanometer does not have polarity as it can be connected either ways in a circuit. Galvanometer is used for the detection and comparison of current flowing through the circuit.
It shows the presence of current in the circuit & along which direction it is flowing i.e., from left to right or from right to left. When there is no current in the circuit needle stays at middle of the meter; but if current is flowing from left to right needle will deflect towards one side and if current is flowing from right to left needle will deflect towards other side. So, the galvanometer is basically to detect current and to show the direction of current in the circuit.
