do the rib cage expands of its own or with the help of lungs ?

The intercostal muscles between the ribs help in expanding the rib cage and thereby enlarging the chest cavity. They contract to pull the rib cage both upward and outward during inhalation. The expansion of rib cage during inhalation creates negative pressure on the lungs and draws air into them.
