Dear Sir, What are surds? How are they used in mathematical operations and what purpose they serve as numbers?

If you can't simplify a number to remove a square root (or cube root etc) then it is a surd. For example, ?5, 3?21 is a surd but 3?8 is not a surd as 3?8 = 2.
 
Surds are actually irrational numbers and there are many uses of them in real life too.
 
The chapter related to surds is included in almost all the competitive exams to test how well one is with solving problems etc.
