After getting hurt by a dirty blade, you may need a tetanus vaccine if the injury has broken your skin and your tetanus vaccinations aren’t up to date. Tetanus is a serious condition. If treated, it’s usually a short-term condition. However, without treatment, tetanus can be fatal. Tetanus is caused by infection with Clostridium tetani bacteria. These bacteria can enter your body through a wound or cut in your skin. Once inside, the bacteria multiply and release a neurotoxin called tetanospasmin. This causes the symptoms of tetanus to develop. If it is not treated, tetanus can be fatal
Tetanus symptoms usually show up 4-21 days after you’ve been infected with the bacteria that cause the infection. Most commonly, symptoms start after about 10 days, but it can be as little as one day or as long as several months.
