A light string passing over a smooth light pulley connects two blocks of masses m1 and m2(vertically).If the acceleration of the system is g/8,find the ratio of the masses.

The force diagram for the pully system can be shown as shown in te figure.
Here a = g/8
thus for each mass system, the equation on force can be written as:
m2 a = T - m2 g
m1 a = m1 g - T
 adding we get:
(m1 + m2)a = (m1 - m2)g
putting value of a and solving we get the ratio as:
m1/m2 = 9/7
