There is a complete fee waiver for the backward classes and physically challenged students of the IITs. Furthermore, there is a 66% concession of fees for those whose family income is less than Rs 5 lakh.

The Supreme Court has also entitled the OBCs an additional 27% of seats in state-funded educational institutions. Thus, pushing the caste-based educational quota in the country up to 49.5%, while 22.5% of government jobs in state-funded educational institutions is allocated for people belonging to scheduled castes.

The fee for foreign students is also most likely to increase from USD 4,000 to USD 10,000 if the proposal for a three-fold hike in annual fees in IITs recommended by the Standing Committee is approved. According to the National Survey Report, IIT Madras led the rank followed by IIT Mumbai and IIT Kharagpur. Currently, 23 branches of IIT in the country have 15%, 7.5% and 27% of seats reserved for SC, ST and OBC candidates, respectively.
